Cathy Sykes - Nursery Proprietor

Ever since qualifying as an N.N.E.B. nursery nurse in 1972, I've known that a small independent nursery, staffed by a committed, child focused and highly skilled team would not only prove to be a successful business, but could also actively contribute to the local community it serves.

With this goal in mind, I've held a number of positions within childcare over the past 30 years in order to do just that. These roles have included work as a nanny in Minneapolis USA and a nursery nurse supervisor, including staff positions, at family centres for special needs children. For several years, I also nursed at Harold Wood Hospital on its children's ward before - during the early 1980's - I gained my C.P.Q qualifications allowing me to progress into nursery management.

Today, I am the mother of 5 children, have been married to my husband Alan for 18 years and we have lived in and around Berkhamsted since 1986. For several years after moving to the town I worked from home as a registered childminder until, in 1991, I realised my life long dream; to open and run my very own day nursery.

Pooh Corner now employees a team of 19 childcare professionals and we have the great responsibility of caring for at least 74 children at any given time. In fact, over the past 13 years we have worked with over 1,700 local parents to give a beneficial and positive start to the lives of their children. This is something my staff and I are very proud to share.
